ASA Tire Systems Preps Software for Upcoming NHTSA Legislation

NASHUA, NH (April 15, 2008) — ASA Tire Systems, the leading software provider for the tire industry, is anticipating Congress will pass a bill allowing tire dealers to register tires electronically, as an option to the current paper-form system. ASA Tire Systems announced today that their TreadX software will capture the DOT information at Point-of-sale and electronically transmit the registration of tires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed to change tire registration regulations and allow the electronic registration of tires by tire dealers. Current Federal Law requires tire dealers to provide customers the ability to register their tires; currently accomplished by giving paper forms to the consumer and relying on the end user to complete and return the forms.

TreadX now offers an interface to CIMS. With the new interface, TreadX users collect and enter DOT numbers, and appropriate tire registration information, at Point-of-Sale. That data is then transmitted via FTP from the TreadX software system directly to CIMS. In turn, CIMS will register the tires with the corresponding manufacturers.

CIMS President Paul Kruder says, “We appreciate the opportunity to work with ASA Tire Systems to provide their tire dealer clients the most efficient and cost-effective method to register tires. By utilizing the interface between ASA's TreadX Software and CIMS' Tire Registration Clearinghouse, tire dealers can fully comply with NHTSA regulations by registering every tire at the Point-of-Sale for the absolute minimum cost. Registering tires at the Point-of-Sale allows tire dealers to achieve NHTSA's ultimate goal of registering 100% of tires sold, which is a "win-win" situation for tire dealers and tire purchasers."

Wayne Croswell, President of ASA Tire Systems, says, “It’s well known that most tires go unregistered with the manufacturers. ASA realized that it could use technology to improve on a bad situation. By capturing the DOT number at Point-of-Sale and electronically sending this data to CIMS, a dealer can provide a great service for its customers. We are excited that the government is taking the right steps in allowing dealers to register tires electronically. In the end, more tires will be registered, and if recalls are necessary, consumers will be served better. We chose to work with CIMS, the leader in tire registration, in making this service a reality. This new feature of TreadX continues to allow our users to improve their operations and the service they provide to their customers.”
